The No. 3 nationally ranked Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Guelph Gryphons 2-1 in a shootout on Thursday (Oct. 19) night at the Gryphon Centre Arena in Guelph, Ont.
Fifth-year goaltender Erica Fryer was excellent in what was a goalie duel, making 26 saves on the night, as well as stopping the three shots she faced in the shootout. Guelph goaltender Martina Fedel stopped 29 of the 30 shots the Blues fired at her.
After a scoreless first period Guelph broke the ice early in the second after forward Chihiro Suzuki gave them a 1-0 lead. As the two teams continued to trade chances, Toronto struck even after Katy McKenna stole the puck from a Guelph defender at the Blues blue line and buried the breakaway to tie the game while shorthanded.
With the goaltending play remaining strong, three periods of play and seven minutes of three on three overtime wasn't enough to break the tie.
In the shootout second-year forward Emma Elders scored for the Blues in what was the eventual shootout winner before Fryer neutralized the Guelph shooters to secure the road victory for the Blues.
The Blues are back in action this Saturday (Oct. 21) night at Varsity Arena against the Brock Badgers. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased
