Competing in a pair of doubleheaders this weekend, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team picked up another three wins, sweeping the York Lions before splitting with the Queen's Gaels.
Beginning the busy weekend of competition at Dentonia Park on Saturday (Sept. 30) versus the Lions, the Blues earned a pair of wins defeating their GTA opponents 9-2 and 8-4.
In Game 1, four different Blues players collected multiple hits, led by a 3-for-3 outing from Lauren Greco. Greco registered two doubles, scoring an RBI and three runs in the win. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Joely Ma showcased her abilities both in the pitching circle and at the plate. As an offensive contributor she went 2-for-2, adding a walk, and scoring three RBI. Then pitching she conceded just two earned runs on five hits through five innings of work.
In Game 2, Toronto utilized six runs scored through the first three innings to pull away from York. Meijin Patil paced the U of T offence going 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI, while Greco added another two RBI to her stellar Saturday. Julia Lacaria earned the win from the pitching circle, shutting out the Lions in 4.2 innings of work, striking out two and giving up just three hits.
On Sunday (Oct. 1), Toronto split their doubleheader versus Queen's winning 2-1 in the opener, before falling 10-9 to close out their weekend.
Ma was back in as the starting pitcher for Game 1 and helped the Blues to the narrow one-run victory surrendering just one earned run on four hits and a walk through seven solid innings, while also striking out six. Madison Mattar picked up one RBI on a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
Following the defensive stalemate in the opening contest, both teams saw their bats re-ignite in Game 2, with Mattar continuing her hot-streak adding another two RBI and two runs on a 3-for-4 outing. Meanwhile, Greco collected another three hits, registering one RBI and three runs in the high-scoring contest.
Toronto will play one more doubleheader versus the TMU Bold next Friday, Oct. 6 to conclude their OUS regular season schedule. First-pitch is set for 7 p.m. back at Dentonia Park.
