TRUSSLER SCORES TWICE IN WIN OVER NO. 6 NIPISSING

The No. 4 nationally-ranked Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the No. 6 Nipissing Lakers 6-2 on Sunday (Jan. 8) afternoon at Varsity Arena.

With the win, the Blues hold a 13-2 record this season, extending their lead in first place to four points.

WHAT HAPPENED: The Blues opened the scoring early in the first period, with first-year forward Emma Elders breaking through the offensive zone and scoring on her backhand after two minutes of play. Second-year forward Katy McKenna then doubled the Blues lead with a goal of her own, eight minutes into the first.

Three minutes later, Kara den Hoed scored for the Nipissing Lakers to bring them within one. The Blues would regain their two-goal lead two minutes later after Lauren MacDonnell grabbed the rebound of a Madelyn Walsh shot on the powerplay. With under two minutes to play in the first, Malory Dominico scored for the Lakers to cut into the Blues lead.

After an action packed first period, the Blues and Lakers came out flying looking to take control of the game, but Blues goalie Erica Fryer and Lakers goalie Chloe Marshall made key saves to keep the game close. With five minutes remaining in the second, second-year defensemen Emma Potter scored the Blues second power play goal of the game to regain their two-goal lead.

In her second game back from injury, captain Taylor Trussler scored two goals in the third period. Seven minutes in, Trussler tipped in an Emma Potter shot on the power play. She finished off the game with an empty net goal.

Fryer finished the game with 15 saves through the 60 minutes.

UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues return to action Friday, January 13 when they face off against the Queen's Gaels at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
