BLUES DEFEAT QUEEN’S IN FIRST OF BACK-TO-BACK

With two point nights from Natasha Athanasakos, Olivia Hilton and Nikki McDonald, the No. 1 nationally-ranked Varsity Blues women's hockey team edged out the Queen's Gaels 5-2 on Friday (Jan. 13) night at the Memorial Centre.

With their win, The Blues hold a 14-2-0-0 record and remain in first place in the OUA East division.

WHAT HAPPENED: First-year Blues dominated the first period with forward Isabella Greco shot trickling into the net five minutes into the game. Centre Kaitlyn McKnight doubled Toronto's lead on the power play ten minutes later.

Olivia Hilton and Nikki McDonald opened the scoring for U of T in the second period, with two quick back-to-back goals in the first five minutes. Minutes later, the Gael's Emma Michalicka cut the Varsity Blues lead to three on the power play.

Captain Taylor Trussler scored her third goal in three games with a clean wrap around to regain the Blues four-goal lead. Queen's Rebecca Thompson scored with eight minutes left on the clock to cut into the Varsity Blues lead.

Toronto's veteran goaltender Madeline Albert held down the fort, saving 22 out of 24 shots on goal.
