The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 2-1 in overtime to the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday (Jan. 6) at Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ont.

The Blues are now 9-6-2-0 and hold on to fifth place in the OUA West division.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Nearing the end of a heated first-period battle, second-year Blues forward Owen Robinson opened the scoring with a perfectly timed snapshot. The Thunderwolves soon followed with a goal of their own from Kevin Stiles, leaving the teams tied at the buzzer.Â

Toronto and Lakehead battled it out in the second period but were held unable to score a goal. The Blues started off the third period on a strong note with commerce majors Cole Purboo and Kyle Potts attempting several promising shots on goal; however, U of T was unable to break through Thunderwolves goalie Max Wright again.Â

The deadlock went on for over 40 minutes, sending the two teams into overtime. Three minutes into the extra frame, Lakehead's Ben Badalementi score to win the game for the Thunderwolves.Â

Blues netminder Jett Alexander came in clutch with a sensational goaltending performance, saving 33 out of the 35 shots on goal throughout the lively evening.Â
