LUCKY NO. 13 – BLUES SWEEP SERIES WITH ‘STANGS

The No. 2 nationally-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team extended their win streak to 13 games with a 4-1 victory over the Western Mustangs on Friday night (Jan. 27) at Thompson Arena in London, Ont.

With the win, the Blues improve to 18-2-0-0 and remain in first place in the OUA East division.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Fresh off her gold-medal performance at the 2023 FISU Games, veteran forward Céline Frappier opened the scoring 3:42 into the contest, tipping in an Olivia Hilton point shot on the powerplay.

The Mustangs evened the score later in the frame as Elizabeth Gauthier scored off a 2-on-1 with Alyssa Wouda. The game was tied at 1-1 after 20 minutes of action.

Toronto regained the lead midway through the second frame as team captain Taylor Trussler extended her point streak to six games, burying her own rebound to beat Mustangs netminder Ella Brabrook.

Just 21 seconds later, Nikki McDonald doubled the Blues lead, finishing off a beautiful between-the-legs pass from Sophie Grawbarger. U of T led 3-1 heading into the final frame.

Third-year defenceman Maddy Walsh rounded out the scoring with a beautiful individual effort midway through the third period, notching her second of the season.

Fourth-year netminder Erica Fryer made 19 saves in the win.

UP NEXT: The Blues return home tomorrow (Jan. 28) as they host the Laurier Golden Hawks at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
