With two-point nights from Natasha Athanasakos, Sophie Grawbarger and Madison Tiro, the Varsity Blues women's hockey team beat the Laurier Golden Hawks 5-2 on Saturday (Jan. 28) night at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues sit first in the OUA East division with 57 points and a 19-2 record.Â
WHAT HAPPENED:Â Second-year forward Katy McKenna opened the scoring two minutes in, as the puck sneaked past Laurier goalie Acadia Carlson.Â
The Blues dominance continued in the second period with the Blues outshooting the Golden Hawks 13-5. Fifth-year forward Celine Frappier scored halfway through the second period, grabbing the rebound of a Taylor Trussler and Athanasakos give-and-go play. Defensemen Caroline Eagles grabbed the Blues third goal three minutes later on the powerplay.
The Golden Hawks cut into the Blues lead five minutes into the third period with a goal from Rylee Crego. Chloe Davidson scored four minutes later to bring Laurier within one.Â
After being sprung for a breakaway by Tiro, Athanasakos scored to restore the Blues two-goal lead. Grawbarger would wrap up the scoring for the Blues with four minutes remaining.Â
Blues starting goalie Madeline Albert finished the game with 19 saves through the 60 minutes.
UP NEXT:Â The Varsity Blues return to action Wednesday, February 1 when they face off against the Guelph Gryphons at the Gryphon Centre Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
