Holding the lead almost the entire game, the No. 1 nationally-ranked Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Brock Badgers 2-0 on Saturday (Jan. 21) night at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues extend their record to 17-2 on the season.
WHAT HAPPENED: The Blues started the first period strong with first-year centre Kaitlyn McKnight opening the scoring only 4 minutes into the game. The Blues' goaltender Madeline Albert helped lock in the home team's lead for the rest of the period. The Whitby, Ont. native made 18 saves over the course of the game.
Toronto continued dominating the game in the second period, outshooting the Badgers 9-5, but ended up unable to get back on the scoresheet. The third period followed a similar pattern, with the Blues prioritizing defence. However, with only six minutes on the clock, the Blues went on to double their lead on a power play. Forward Aili McKeown received a slap pass from defencemen Madelyn Walsh and scored a surgically-precise one-timer, shooting just out of Badgers goaltender Kenzie Harmison's reach and securing the game for the Blues.
UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues return to action Friday, January 27 when they face off against the Western Mustangs at Thompson Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
