With his second goal of the night, Eddie Yan pushed the Varsity Blues men's hockey team to a 3-2 overtime victory against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 21) at Varsity Arena.
The win pushes the Blues into fifth in the OUA West division with 24 points and an 11-8-2 record.
WHAT HAPPENED: The Blues started the game with a strong spirit but didn't end up breaking through Waterloo's goaltender Dan Murphy in the first. The Warriors, however, managed to grab an early goal from Dan Walker and spent most of the first with the lead.
Attack set the tone for the Varsity Blues in the second, resulting in the Blues outshooting the Warriors 11-6. Refusing to give up, Toronto began the period by tying up the game, after forward Owen Guy faked out his defender and Cole Purboo put it past the goalie.
12 minutes later, the Blues found themselves in the lead thanks to a swift wraparound goal from rookie Eddie Yan. With three minutes left in the period, Walker scored his second of the game cutting into the Blues lead and ending the period tied.
After a period of back and forth play, Toronto and Waterloo remained tied at 2-2 and headed into overtime.
Halfway into the extra frame, Yan scored his second of the game after grabbing the rebound of fellow forward Peyton Reeves' shot.
Toronto's second-year goaltender Jett Alexander made 22 saves over the course of the night.
UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues return to action on Friday, January 27 when they face off against the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines, Ont. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m.
