With the help of captain Taylor Trussler's two goals, the No. 1 nationally-ranked Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Western Mustangs 4-1 on Friday (Jan. 20) night at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues sit first in the OUA East division with 48 points and a 16-2 record.
WHAT HAPPENED: The Mustangs opened the scoring early in the first period with a goal from defensemen Sarah Irwin, four minutes in. Western wouldn't hold their lead for long with Blues rookie Isabella Greco tying up the game three minutes later.
The Blues came out strong in the second period, dominating play. Trussler scored on the power play to give the Blues their first lead of the night six minutes into the period. Trussler grabbed her second of the night halfway through the period to double the Blues lead.
Despite a penalty-filled third period for the Blues and Mustangs, U of T starting goalie Erica Fryer held the fort down making key saves throughout the period. Fryer finished the game with 24 saves. Forward Aili McKeown would add a goal of her own halfway through the third to wrap up the scoring for the night.
UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues return to action Saturday, January 21 when they face off against the Brock Badgers at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
