For the first time since February 2, 2002, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team downed the No. 2 Carleton Ravens, leading from start to finish en route to a 56-54 victory on Friday, January 20 at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
With the win, the Blues move into sole possession of first place in the OUA Central division with an 11-4 record.
TORONTO STATS: Second-year forward Lennart Weber led the Blues with a double-double performance. The native of Wiesbaden, Germany totaled 15 points and 11 rebounds, while adding four assists and three steals.
Third-year Flagler Saints transfer Callum Baker recorded 14 points in the win, along with four assists, three steals and one rebound. Third-year forward Anthony Daudu recorded a game-high 14 rebounds on the night and chipped in with seven points.
HOW IT HAPPENED: A back-and-forth game between the Blues and the Ravens confirmed the Blues place amongst the top competition in the OUA.
The Blues started strong, taking a ten-point lead through the first quarter (21-11). Although the Ravens battled back in the second quarter, the Blues were able to stay out front, finishing the half up 32-28.
During the third quarter, little separated the Blues and Ravens as both teams kept up the pressure with frequent ties. The Blues took a two-point advantage into the final frame, 46-44.
In the fourth quarter, the Blues were able to maintain their lead with crucial plays by Weber and Baker to take the Ravens down 56-54 - the lowest points scored by the Ravens in an OUA regular season game since 1999.
