With the help of a 29-save performance from goalie Jett Alexander, the Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Guelph Gryphons 3-1 on Saturday (Jan. 14) night at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues hold a 10-7-2 record this season with 24 points, leaving them tied for fourth place in the OUA West division.
WHAT HAPPENED: The first period was a dominant one for the Blues, outshooting the Gryphons 15-6. Despite their high shot total, the Blues got past Gryphons goalie, Brendan Cregan, once, resulting from a Ryan Barbosa slapshot on the power play.
Early in the second period, the Varsity Blues would double their lead on the power play, thanks to Barbosa's second of the game who grabbed the rebound of an Owen Guy shot. The Gryphons picked up their pace in the back half of the second period and in the third, but Alexander made key saves throughout to hold the Blues two-goal lead. Guelph would cut into the lead with just over three minutes to play with a goal from Nolan DeGurse.
Forward Ross Krieger scored on the empty net to solidify the game for U of T.
UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues return to action Thursday, January 19 when they face off against the York Lions at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
