SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST OTTAWA

Hosting the Ottawa Gee-Gees Saturday afternoon at Dieppe Park, the Toronto Varsity Blues won the first half of their doubleheader, before falling in the latter of the two games.

Starting the day off right, the Blues scored a pair of runs in their first inning on RBI singles from Erin Sullivan and Emily Fujiwara. Then in the third inning, Toronto added to their lead on an Amanda DeConinck double that scored Janelle Hodge.

After the Gee-Gees responded with a run in the bottom of the third, and another in the bottom of the fifth, the Blues turned to Katie Humhej on the mound, who came in to record the save, throwing two and a third innings, allowing just a single hit, to secure the 3-2 victory. Sullivan got the start on the mound for Toronto going two innings, also just allowing one hit. Joely Ma pitched the two and two third innings in between, and although she surrendered both runs, neither were earned.

In the back half of the twin-bill, Ottawa flipped the script on the Blues and jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning. Toronto was able to respond with a single run in the bottom of the second thanks to a Fujiwara RBI groundout, however, the Gee-Gees would respond with two more runs in the third and another pair in the sixth.

Hodge finished the second game two for three at the plate, and overall, went five for seven for the day.

Ma pitched all seven innings of the second contest.

The Blues will quickly return to action as they return to Dieppe Park on September 25 to host Carleton for a pair of games.
