Hosting the 52
nd annual Red and Blue Bowl, Toronto was able to retain the Argo Cup with a 39-7 victory over their cross-town rivals, led by a three-touchdown performance from Luka Stoikos.
Although it took the Varsity Blues (2-3) a few series to get rolling Saturday afternoon against the York Lions (1-4), once they found their stride, they were nearly unstoppable.
Holding a 3-0 lead late in the first half, an opportunistic defence swung momentum into the Blues favour with two minutes to go in the second quarter. After a York lateral attempt was bobbled, veteran linebacker James Greig scooped up the loose ball and returned it 26-yards for the major. After scoring a rouge on the final play of the half, the Blues headed into the break with an 11-0 lead.
On the opening play of the third quarter, the visitors made things interesting with a kick return that set York up inside the Blues red zone. Converting on the field position, the Lions got on the board with a Noah Craney 10-yard touchdown run.
It was all Blues from there as Stoikos took over the game. The second-year running back ran for three second-half touchdowns, including one from 35-yards out, in which he made multiple Lions miss along the way.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the game came in the fourth quarter when offensive lineman, Mojtaba Mehry recorded his first career touchdown. The 6'5, 300 pound fourth-year, leaked into the end zone and hauled in a Kinsale Philip pass for the score.
Along with his three touchdowns, Stoikos finished the contest with a game-high 125 yards rushing. Philip went 11 for 21 with 122 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Defensively, Ryan Collins led the team in tackles with six, while Jeremy Sinclair had three tackles for loss.
Looking to get back to .500, the Blues will head to Waterloo on October 1 to take on the Warriors.
