With plenty of playoff implication on the line Saturday afternoon in Waterloo, the Toronto Varsity Blues (3-3) went on the road and took care of business to the tune of a 32-24 victory over the Waterloo Warriors (1-4), their first win over Waterloo since 2016.
Led by Adam Williams, and the entire running back room, the Blues rushed the ball for exactly 300 yards while picking up their third victory of the season.
In the early stages of the contest, it was the defence setting the tone. Flying to the ball, the Blues forced Waterloo into a punting situation from their own end zone, where they elected to concede a safety and give Toronto a 2-0 lead.
Once the Blues were on the board, Williams began to create separation for the visitors. The Kinesiology student ran in a five-yard touchdown midway through the opening quarter before taking off on a 68-yard touchdown ramp early in the second. The latter of the two scores gave Toronto a 16-0 lead.
After Waterloo responded with a field goal, and a rouge, the Blues got three points back with a 28-yard field goal from freshman Samuel Henke, as Toronto entered the halftime break with a 19-4 lead.
As the second half kicked off, a see-saw battle began.
Waterloo would go on to score a major on their opening drive of the third quarter. However, less than five minutes later, Henke would connect on his second field goal of the contest. Then, after the
Warriors scored another touchdown to start the fourth quarter, Luka Stoikos responded for the Blues in a huge way. Fielding the ensuing kick off from his own five-yard line, Stoikos returned the kick 105-yards for a touchdown to put the Blues up 29-17.
With 6:55 to go, Waterloo would find the end zone once more to pull within 29-24. That is as close as Toronto would allow them though. Henke would hit a 12-yard field goal with less than three minutes to play, extending the lead to eight, before Ryan Stewart recorded his first career OUA interception in the final minute to seal the victory.
Running wild, Williams finished the game with a career-high 243 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Directing traffic, Kinsale Philip went 10 for 16, recording 104 passing yards. On the defensive side, the Blues had multiple members step up. Stewart, Owen Cassie and Cody Hale each recorded an interception. Cassie also led the Blues in tackles with 9.5. Jeremy Sinclair tallied a pair of sacks to go along with a forced fumble, while James Greig also registered a forced fumble to go along with one sack.
With their record at .500, Toronto will now return home to Varsity Stadium and prepare to host the No. 1 Western Mustangs on Oct. 7. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
