Despite a strong start, the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-3) were unable to get much rolling after the first quarter in a Saturday night loss to the Windsor Lancers (2-1) in Windsor, Ont.
Looking to bounce back from a close loss to Laurier last week, the Blues jumped on the board first but ultimately fell 37-7 to Windsor.
Although the Lancers were at home and coming off their bye week, it was Toronto that would snatch momentum early. After the defence stuffed the Lancers on a third-and-short near midfield, the Blues offence quickly took advantage driving the ball 50-yards in seven plays, and scoring the first points of the contest with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Kinsale Philip to Daniel Diodati.
With the touchdown, and a 7-0 lead, momentum appeared to be on Toronto's side but that was not the case. The Lancers would respond with back-to-back field goals to pull within one, before taking their first lead on a two-yard Chris John touchdown run with 6:21 to play in the half.
Then with only seven seconds to play before the break, Lancers kicker, Brady Lidster connected on a 42-yard field goal to send Windsor into halftime with a 16-7 lead.
Windsor would go on to score a major on their first drive of the third quarter to go ahead 23-7. The Lancers would add one more touchdown in the third, before rounding out the scoring with a major late in the fourth.
Kinsale Philip finished the game 10 of 19 for 88 yards and a touchdown. Adam Williams had 41 yards on the ground on seven carries, while Daniel Diodati caught the lone touchdown for Toronto. Defensively, James Greig led the team with eight and a half tackles.
The Blues will now return home looking to get back in the win column on Saturday when they host the York Lions in the 52
nd annual Red and Blue Bowl.
