MOYSE, PAGNELLO, RUHNKE HEADLINE 2022 U OF T SPORTS HALL OF FAME CLASS

A men's hockey dynasty and an Olympic champion highlight the 13 newest University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame inductees who will be celebrated on Thursday, May 26, 2022.

The event returns, following a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, and will be held at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport on the University of Toronto's downtown campus.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased in advance, here. The reception will start at 6:00 p.m., with the ceremony to follow at 7:00 p.m., in the Kimel Family Field House.

Kent Ruhnke, a three-time OUAA and 1975-76 CIAU champion and University Cup MVP, along with teammate Rocci Pagnello, who is also a three-time provincial, two-time national champion and 1976-77 University Cup MVP, will both be inducted as individual athletes.  They will be joined by the rest of their team when their outstanding achievements are celebrated and the 1975-76 and 1976-77 Varsity Blues national championship teams are also inducted. Between the two teams, a pair of Varsity Blues would go on to play in the NHL. A member of the 1975-76 team, Ruhnke would play with the Boston Bruins, while Larry Hopkins, a member of both national championship teams, also went on to play in the NHL, spending time with both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets.

Two-time Olympic champion and former Varsity Blues women's rugby and track and field student-athlete, Heather Moyse, also highlights this year's call. A CIS all-Canadian in rugby and a second team all-Canadian in track, Moyse went on to Olympic glory following her collegiate career, winning gold in 2010 and 2014 two-person bobsleigh event.  She competed with the Canadian national women's rugby team at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, and at the World Cup 7s in 2013.

Long-time Varsity Blues staffer, Dave Copp, is the lone builder in this year's class. Copp spent most of the 1970s as the director of men's intramurals before becoming the coordinator of intercollegiate athletics. During that time, Copp also served 14 years as an assistant coach with the Varsity Blues football program, helping lead to the Blues to the Yates Cup and Vanier Cup in 1974.

The Sports Hall of Fame honours U of T's greatest athletes and builders. It was established by the T-Holders' Association in 1987 as part of an ongoing effort to preserve and display the records relating to the outstanding historical tradition of athletic, academic and community leadership fostered by the University of Toronto.
