The No. 4 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team went down in four sets to the No. 5 McGill Martlets in a U SPORTS quarter-final matchup on Friday (Mar. 26).
With the loss, the Blues are in the consolation bracket and will play the host Calgary Dinos on Saturday, March 26 at 5:00 p.m.Â
TORONTO STATS: The Blues were led by U SPORTS rookie of the year Julia Murmann and U SPORTS second team all-Canadian Jenna Woock as the two finished with 20 and 15 kills, respectively. Murmann would add one service ace and 14 digs, while Woock had 1.5 blocks and one service ace.
First-year outside hitter Asya Dogruer chipped in with 10 kills and one block. Libero Sophia Currier had 13 digs, while veteran setter Hayley Goodwin distributed 47 assists.
MIKASA TOP PERFORMER:Â Jenna Woock earned the honour for her efforts in the middle.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues stormed out to a 12-7 lead, forcing a McGill timeout and would take the technical timeout at 16-10. Toronto was able to push through a Martlet rally to win the first set 25-20. Â
In the second, Toronto was able to once again control the pace of play, taking the technical timeout at 16-13. The Martlets would force a Blues timeout at 19-19. McGill would take a 23-22 lead and not look back, taking the second 25-23.
The Blues would go down early 9-6 in the third, calling a timeout and would be down 16-13 at the technical timeout. The Martlets rode their momentum to a 25-16 third-set victory.
The fourth set would be tight throughout and Toronto would be down by one at the technical timeout, 16-15. Sensing the tide shifting, coach Kristine Drakich called a timeout at 19-16. The Blues were unable to finish their comeback effort, ultimately falling in the fourth set 25-19.
