The No. 4 Varsity Blues men's volleyball team fell to the hometown Manitoba Bisons 3-0 (17-25, 15-25, 27-29) on Saturday, Mar. 26 in the U SPORTS Consolation Semifinal.
TORONTO STATS: Second-year left side Martin Licht led all Blues with a season-high 8.5 points off eight kills and an assisted block, while first-year setter Davis Young distributed 29-assists.
Mikasa Top Performer: First-year libero and Winnipeg, Man. native, Rylan Armstrong led all players with 10 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Heading into the first set technical timeout
, the Bisons held a two-point advantage over the Blues. After hitting two-straight errors following the stoppage, Toronto head coach John Barrett would be forced to call a timeout. The Bisons would end up taking the set by a score of 25-17.
The second set would mirror the first. The Blues and Bison would be locked in a tight contest up until the technical timeout before back-to-back errors would again force the Blues into another mid-set timeout. The Bisons would claim the set 25-17.
The third set would be a different story. The introduction of brothers Martin and Benedikt Licht would see Toronto's momentum change. A kill from Martin had the Blues and Bisons locked at 15-15 ahead of the technical timeout before Martin's subsequent serve would result in an error and give the Bisons the lead. After trading attack after attack, the Blues and Bisons would be tied at 25-25 when Manitoba's Ben Carleton's service ace would give the Bisons the advantage. First-year Jayden Talsma would hit back-to-back kills switching the advantage in Toronto's favour. Manitoba battled back with a kill and a service ace to ultimately claim the set 29-27.
