Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

NO. 1 BLUES CONTINUE TO ROLL WITH VICTORY OVER LIONS

Continuing to hold their ranking as the number one team in the country, the Toronto Varsity Blues once again proved what makes them worthy of that position with a strong sixty-minute performance on February 25 in York. Using a full team effort, the Blues left Canlan Ice Sports with a 4-1 victory and three more points in their back pocket.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Varsity Blues made their presence felt early on in the contest, and with that, wound up scoring first. 6:35 into the game, Lauren MacDonnell had the puck bounce on to her stick at the top of the crease and she proceeded to jam the puck home. Not backing down from the Blues, York would find the equalizer just over seven minutes later on a goal from Tayler Murphy. The game would then remain tied 1-1 heading into the second.

Throughout much of the second period, neither side was able to find the go-ahead goal. As the latter stages of the middle frame approached though, it was a likely source of offence for the Blues that would come through. Scoring her team leading eighth goal of the season, Taylor Trussler gave Toronto the lead back with 5:44 to go in the frame.

Midway through the third, the Blues were able to take their first two-goal lead of the game. Breaking in down the right side, Gabreille De Serres pulled the puck to her left, across the crease, and tucked it around York goalie Serena Vilde. Toronto would then seal the game on a Natasha Athanasakos empty-netter.

Continuing her incredible play all season long, Blues netminder Erica Fryer allowed one goal or less for the fifth straight game. On Friday, she turned away 18 of York's 19 shots. Meanwhile, Toronto peppered Vilde with 40 shots.

UP NEXT: The Blues will return to Varsity Arena on February 26 to complete a home-and-home series with the Lions. The Blues will also be hosting Pride Night, as well as Senior's Night on Saturday too. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
