BALANCED ATTACK LEADS NO. 1 BLUES OVER NO. 5 LAKERS

In a battle of Top 10 teams, the No. 1 University of Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the No. 5 Nipissing Lakers 4-1 on February 16.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues scored a minute into the contest off of the stick of Lauren MacDonnell. After the Toronto goal, neither team was able to find the scoreboard in the period, despite ten plus shots from each squad.

The Blues capitalized on multiple penalties from the Lakers in the second. Fourth-year defenseman Gabrielle De Serres shot a puck past the glove of Laker goalie Chantelle Sandquist early in the frame. Nipissing would cut the lead in half off of a goal from first-year forward Malory Dominico. Rookie forward Katy McKenna found the back of the net on the third Blues powerplay of the period to restore the two-goal advantage.

In the third, Céline Frappier put the puck top corner to help the Blues go up 4-1. The Blues would kill off two penalties in the third, preventing the Laker comeback.

Erica Fryer has continued her sensational last couple of weeks, making 32 saves to earn her ninth win. The third-year netminder earned both OUA and U SPORTS athlete of the week because of her two shutout performances last week against the Rams.

UP NEXT: The Blues are back on the road as they head to Oshawa to take on the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. Puck drop is set for 11:00 a.m.
