The No. 1 Toronto Varsity Blues continued to fire on all cylinders on Tuesday, February 15. Playing host to the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, the Blues rolled to a 4-1 victory securing their third straight win to begin the OUA restart.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â Setting the tempo early, it did not take long for the Varsity Blues to jump out in front. With the game just over five minutes old, both Celine Frappier and Lauren MacDonnell chased down a loose puck in the crease. In the end, it was Frappier being credited with the last touch and the first goal of the contest.
Leading by only a goal after one period of play, the Blues began to separate themselves from Ontario Tech in the middle frame. First, it was Natasha Athanasakos playing give-and-go with Taylor Trussler before burying the puck past Ridgebacks goalie Zoe McGee. Then, just over three minutes later, Trussler elected to keep the puck on her stick as she entered the offensive zone and unleashed a laser over McGee's shoulder extending the lead to three.
Beginning the third period with a power-play, the home side took advantage. Intercepting a pass behind the Ontario Tech goal, Frappier brought the puck out front and fired it home for a 4-0 lead. The score would remain that way until the final five minutes of the contest when the Ridgebacks were able to get on the board with a goal from Erin Ross, bringing an end to Fryer's shut-out streak which lasted more than three regulation games at 180 minutes and 15 seconds.
In the contest, Fryer turned aside 36 of the 37 shots she faced.
UP NEXT:Â The Blues will be right back at it in less than 24-hours as they return to Varsity Arena on February 16 to host the Nipissing Lakers. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m. Â
