Although each set was tightly contested, the No. 9 Varsity Blues found themselves on the wrong side of a 3-0 (25-27, 23-25, 25-27) score Sunday evening in Kingston, Ont., against the Queen's Gaels.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Having just won a five-set match the day prior against the Gaels, the Blues once again were in a battle. From the very first point, it was clear that little was going to separate these two sides once again. All though the opening set, both teams used high power attacks, and strong defence, but neither side was able to gain much of a lead. A total of 41 points were played in the opening set with the score either tied, or one team leading by one. Tied 25-25, back-to-back Queen's kills would ultimately win the set for the home side.
In the middle set, it was more of the same. After the Blues took a 4-0 lead, it once again became a see-saw battle. Trying to pull away, the Blues went up 16-11 on a Queen's service error, however, the Gaels battled back with to tie the set 18-18. From there, both teams went back and forth before Queen's was able to secure the set 25-23.
The final set of the match saw the same trend continue. Toronto was able establish a 14-10 advantage, and later 16-12 but the Queen's continued to fight. After a John Dunning kill tied the score 21-21, the two teams went point-for-point until Queen's went up 26-25. The Gaels would win the next point and with it, the match.
Martin Licht led the Blues in kills with 12.
UP NEXT: The Blues will take on the York Lions Thursday night in Toronto's home-opener.
