The Varsity Blues' men's volleyball team took down the York Lions 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 46-44) Thursday (Nov. 10) night, in a match that featured one of the craziest sets played in the Goldring Centre.
Following 90 total points in the fourth-set alone, the Blues finally secured victory in their home opener after winning the fourth 46-44.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The first set proved to be a challenge for Toronto with York jumping out to an early 1-0 lead. However, the Blues quickly responded in the second. Taking control midway through the set, the Blues were able to secure a 25-20 victory of their own. An incredible diving save by Blues' left side Evan Falardeau helped spark Toronto's run to even the match.
In the third round, defence set the tone, with each member of the Blues making key saves. Their scrappy effort became contagious, as the Blues went on to win their second set in a row by a score of 25-20.
Leading 2-1 heading into the fourth, the Blues did everything in their power to end the match, however, the Lions consistently fought back. In what was a tight set all throughout, the two teams wound up tied 24-24. From there, the match seemed like it may continue into the morning. In a true see-saw fashion, it was back and forth. Much to the dismay of the entire crowd, the set reached 44-44 with still no winner. Then with the Blues leading 45-44 Falardeau registered his 25
th and final kill of the night, sending Toronto to victory.
Davis Young finished with 47 key assists, while Daniel Tudor recorded 16 digs, both playing a significant role in the Blues' win.
