The Varsity Blues women's hockey team won 2-1 over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Thursday (Nov. 3) night at Varsity Arena.
With the win, the Blues improve their record to 4-1, holding their first-place position in the OUA East division.
WHAT HAPPENED: Despite the first period staying scoreless, the Blues offence set the tone of the game and proved their dominance in the second period, scoring twice back-to-back.
10 minutes into the second period, Blues' third-year center Lauren McDonnell opened the scoring, with a powerplay goal. The Summerville, S.C. native deflected second-year defenceman Olivia Hilton's effort to give the Blues the early lead.
Less than a minute later, Blues' second-year forward Nikki McDonald extended Toronto's lead to two and set up the Blues to stay ahead of the Ridgebacks for the rest of the game.
The Ridgebacks did respond through third-year forward Brooklyn Duff in the final minutes of the second period, but Blues fourth-year goaltender Erica Fryer ensured the Blues would see out their lead. The Kinesiology major recorded 15 saves in the win.
