MCDONALDS SCORES TWO AS BLUES DROP GAELS IN NAILBITER

Box Score The Varsity Blues women's hockey team played to a 5-4 win over the Queen's Gaels on Friday (Nov. 11) night at Varsity Arena.
 
With the win, the Blues improve their record to 5-1, holding their first-place position in the OUA East division.

WHAT HAPPENED:  The Blues opened the scoring in the early minutes of the first period by way of third-year forward Juliette Blais-Savoie. The San Jose, Cali. native's effort went five-hole on Queen's goaltender Lexi Giorgi. Capitalizing on the momentum generated by Blais-Savoie's goal, the Blues out shot the Gaels 17-5 through the period.
 
The Blues dominance continued into the second period. Making the most of a Queen's deflection, second-year forward Nikki McDonald scored her second of the year. However, it was the Blues defensive performance that highlighted the period. The Blues blueliners prevented Queen's from recording a single shot through the entire 20-minutes of play.
 
In the opening minute of the third period, McDonald scored her second of the game. The Health & Disease/Evolutionary Biology major, rounded out the Queen's netminder to extend the Blues lead to 3-0. Seven minutes later, second-year defenceman Francesca Monte's power play effort secured the Blues fourth goal of the game.

 
 
With six minutes left to play the Gaels scored three unanswered goals, before Blues third-year centre Natasha Athanasakos scored on the empty net to secure the Blues win. However, it was the Gaels would strike last narrowing Toronto's winning margin to 5-4.
 
Fifth-year goaltender Madeline Albert faced 13 shots in the contest, saving nine of them.
 
UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues return to action Saturday, November 12 when they face off against the Guelph Gryphons. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
