BLUES WIN MERRILY STRATTEN DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIPS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's swimming teams both placed first overall at the 2022 OUA Merrily Stratten division championships this weekend (Nov. 26-27) at Varsity Pool.
 
TEAM SCORES: Toronto's men racked up 1005 points, ahead of the Western Mustangs (805), Waterloo Warriors (751.5) and McMaster Marauders (562.5). The Blues women accumulated 1283 points, ahead of Western (771), McMaster (579.5) and Waterloo (505.5).
 
WOMEN'S RESULTS: The Blues women won all but one race over the two-day meet. Leading the way for the Blues was rookie Nina Mollin. The Illinois native won four individual races in the 200 and 400 individual medley (IM) events, as well as the 100 butterfly and 200 backstroke.
 
Fourth-year's Ainsley McMurray and Aleksa Gold finished the meet with three individual victories. McMurray placed first in the 50 and 100 freestyle, as well as the 50 butterfly. Gold took the top spot in the 50-, 100- and 200-meter backstroke. 
 
Anna Hein was a double winner, touching the wall first in the 200 butterfly and 800 freestyle races, while Haley Klink won the 200 freestyle. Madeline Spencer took the top spot in the 100 backstroke and Claire Howard claimed gold in the 400 freestyle. 
 
MEN'S RESULTS: The Blues men were strong at the division championships, winning all but two races. Gabriel Mastromatteo led the way for the Blues men with three victories. The Kenora, Ont. native won the 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke events. 
 
Sophmore Carter Buck placed first in the 50 and 200 backstroke events, while Bernard Godolphin took top spot in the 100 and 200 freestyle races. 
 
Ben Loewen and Michael Sava were both winners of two races over the weekend. Loewen finished first in the 100 backstroke and 400 IM races, while Sava topped the 100 and 200 butterfly events.
 
Liam Weaver and Quinn Matteis won the 50 and 1500 freestyle events, respectively, while Jacob Gallant took the top spot in the 200 IM. 
 
UP NEXT: The Blues return to action in the New Year when they host the University of Ottawa on Saturday, January 14.
