BLUES BEGIN SEASON WITH TRI-MEET WIN AT WATERLOO

Both the University of Toronto men's and women's swimming teams claimed victory in a tri-meet versus the Waterloo Warriors and Guelph Gryphons on Saturday (Oct. 4) in Waterloo.

U of T swimmers were dominant in the pool, winning 24 of the 26 total events completed.

In addition to the first-place finishes, Blues swimmers also set three new records with Andrew Herman in the 100m back, Teagan Vanderleek in the 50m freestyle and the women's 4x50m freestyle relay.

"This is a great way to start the racing part of our season," said Varsity Blues swimming head coach Byron MacDonald. "We run two kilometres before the swims and then race in a 25-yard course instead of usual 25m course, so it was impressive to see everyone respond so well. For Andrew [Herman], he has lofty international goals so setting records like this has to be on the agenda. And then Teagan can always be counted on to find the speed when she needs it and did so again today. It was a great start overall for the whole team."

U of T will next welcome the McMaster Marauders for a dual meet at Varsity Pool on Saturday, Oct. 18 marking the first home meet of the season. Several U of T swimmers will then compete at the 2025 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup, hosted this year at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre from Oct. 23-25.

"I have a saying that a swimmer won't swim well until the third meet of the season," added MacDonald. "So we need this one and the one against McMaster in two weeks to prime us for the World Cup at the end of October."
