PURBOO SCORES TWO AS BLUES DROP THUNDERWOLVES

The Varsity Blues men's hockey team won 4-1 against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday night (Nov. 19) at Varsity Arena.

With the win, the Blues take the fourth-place spot in the OUA West division with a 7-4 record and 16 points.

WHAT HAPPENED:  The Blues opened the scoring in the first period. Following a sustained effort from the Blues offence, second-year forward Cole Purboo buried Owen Robinson's rebound on the Lakehead netminder.

Holding their position on the front foot, the Blues doubled their lead five minutes into the second period. Second-year Brock University transfer Owen Guy found third-year forward Ross Krieger on the rush to extend the Blues lead to two.

The Thunderwolves closed out the second period scoring, responding by way of third-year forward Tyler Jette to shrink the Blues lead to one.

Midway through the third period Blues rookie forward Eddie Yan extended the Blues lead to two. The Beijing, China native made good on his second opportunity of the shift following a deflection from Queen's third-year transfer Ryan Barbosa.

With just three minutes remaining and one-on-one opportunity presenting itself, Purboo scored his second of the game to secure the Blues their 4-1 win.

Second-year goaltender Jett Alexander faced 28 shots in the contest, saving 27 of them.

UP NEXT: The Varsity Blues return to the ice Thursday, November 24 when they faceoff against the Guelph Gryphons in Guelph. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
