Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

BLUES COME UP SHORT IN DEFENSIVE BATTLE

In search of a sixth straight win, the No. 4 Varsity Blues returned to the ice Saturday night at Varsity Arena to host the Guelph Gryphons.

Finding themselves in a defensive battle throughout the night, the Blues were unable to keep their streak alive, dropping a 1-0 decision to Guelph.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Although there were some chances created throughout the opening twenty minutes of play, there were not many shots registered, while zeros remained in the goal columns. Toronto went on to out-shoot the Gryphons 4-2 in the period, with neither side able to find the back of the net.

Even as both sides looked to get on the board, the second period offered more of the same as the first. During the middle frame, the Blues did have a 4-on-3 advantage that later turned into a 5-on-3, but were unable to cash in. The Gryphons also had power-play opportunities as well, but like Toronto, were unable to get anything in the back of the net.

It wasn't until nearly halfway through the third when the deadlock wound finally be broken. A quick shot from the slot by Tori Verbeek would give the visitors a 1-0 lead. That goal would wind up being the lone marker of the contest, as the Gryphons held on for the narrow victory.

Erica Fryer made 13 saves on 14 shots in the loss.

UP NEXT: The Blues will hit the road to Waterloo, Ont., on November 17 as they get set to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks in what will be their first meeting of the regular season. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
