Back on their home ice, the Varsity Blues fought off a Guelph Gryphons squad Saturday afternoon to earn a 5-4 victory in overtime.
HOW IT HAPPENED: For the Blues, it didn't take long to establish a lead. Just about five minutes into the game, Gryphon's goalie Tanner Wickware misplayed a puck at the side of the net. Once the puck rolled on to the stick of Owen Robinson, he fired it into the open cage. Just over four minutes later, the Blues were able to double their lead, taking advantage of another Guelph turnover. Intercepting a Gryphon's clearing attempt, Ross Krieger found Eddie Yan in the slot, who sent a one-timer past Wickware. However, before the opening period expired, the Gryphons were able to get one
back, cutting the Toronto lead in the half heading into the intermission.
As the second period got underway, Robinson was able to restore the Toronto two-goal lead. Scoring his second goal of the game, the second-year forward converted on the power-play from the top of the crease. Just over two minutes later though, a seeing-eye point-shot from Tristan De Jong found its way through to pull Guelph back within one. Despite a couple of good chances throughout the rest of the period, neither side was able to score again before the horn sounded for the second intermission.
Continuing to lead by one, the Varsity Blues saw their advantage disappear a little over eight minutes into the third. Fortunately, it did not take long for Toronto to go back out in front. Shortly after the midway point of the frame, Owen Guy accelerated through the neutral zone before splitting the Guelph defence before roofing the puck over the shoulder of Colton Incze. Incze had recently entered the game for the Gryphons after an equipment issue led to Wickware leaving the contest. The Gryphons would then come back again to tie the game in the final two minutes forcing overtime.
In the OT session, the Blues would go on to secure the extra point when Cole Purboo tipped home a perfect pass from Billy Moskal.
UP NEXT: The Blues will head to London, Ont., on November 18 for their third and final meeting of the regular season with the Western Mustangs. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
