BLUES GO 4-0 ON OPENING WEEKEND

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team registered four wins to open the 2021 OIWFA season this past weekend (Sept. 18-19).

Toronto 4, Queen's 3

The game was tied at three with the Varsity Blues batting in the top of the seventh when Beth DeConinck's sac fly scored one run. Erin Sullivan earned the victory in the pitcher's circle for the Varsity Blues. The pitcher lasted six innings, allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out four and walking zero.  Rachel Seguin threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.  Seguin recorded the last three outs to earn the save.
  
Katie Humhej, Julia Chapman, Jessica Tamayo, Sullivan, Mihret Eliasziw, and Katie Monat each managed one hit to lead U of T offensively.
 
Toronto 1, Queen's 0
 
Katie Humhej was brilliant in the circle on Saturday, throwing a no-hitter to lead the Blues sweep of the Gaels. 
 
The pitching was strong on both sides. Humhej struck out ten, while Abby Jacklin sat down seven.

Humhej went seven innings, allowing zero runs on zero hits, striking out 10 and walking zero.
 
Amanda DeConinck led U of T with two hits in two at bats.
 
Toronto 10, Carleton 2

Katie Humhej was in the zone on Sunday, tallying four hits and leading the Blues to a lopsided win over Carleton.  Humhej doubled in the second, singled in the third, singled in the fourth, and doubled in the sixth.
 
The Blues secured the victory thanks to six runs in the third inning.  The big inning was thanks to singles by Erin Sullivan and Humhej, an error on a ball put in play by Mihret Eliasziw, and a double by Katie Monat.
 
Rachel Seguin earned the win on the mound. The right-hander went four and a third innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out two.  Sullivan threw one and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen.
 
Toronto 6, Carleton 1
 
The Blues picked up where they left off in the second game of the day and got things moving in the first inning when Katie Humhej singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
 
The Ravens knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the third inning but U of T pulled away for good with three runs in the fourth inning.  In the fourth, Anna Laird singled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs and Katelyn Graham singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.
 
Humhej took the win on the mound, allowing one hit and zero runs over four innings, striking out six and walking zero. Aurora Nowicki started the game for Toronto, surrendering one run on three hits over three innings, striking out three and walking zero
