The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team notched four lopsided victories over the York Lions to open their 2021 season (Sept. 18-19).

Toronto 12, York 0
Three pitchers combined to throw a shutout in the first game of the weekend at Dan Lang Field.  The Blues secured the victory thanks to seven runs in the fifth inning. Toronto's offence in the inning came from singles by Owen Taylor, Niko Kekatos, and Kristyan Puyols-Gennosar, a walk by Michael DeLuca, a fielder's choice by Aaron Kreithen, and an error on a ball put in play by Maxwell Denison.

Conall Helverson led things off on the hill for U of T, allowing zero hits and zero runs over four innings, striking out six.

Toronto tallied eight hits on the day. Taylor and Puyols-Gennosar each racked up multiple hits for the Blues with Taylor leading the way with three hits in four at bats.

Toronto 17, York 7
Â
York scored seven runs in the fifth inning, but the Blues still won 17-7 on Saturday. Toronto collected 12 hits and York had four in the high-scoring affair.

The Blues fired up the offence in the first inning, when Matt Myhal singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.

Kevin Angers was on the mound for U of T. The righty allowed zero hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out four and walking one.

Maxwell Denison led the Blues with three hits in four at bats.

Toronto 20, York 1
The Blues sailed to an easy 20-1 victory on Sunday at Vaughan Grove Park.

Toronto notched nine runs in the fifth inning. Rickey Reyes, Kristyan Puyols-Gennosar, Kevin Angers, Aaron Kreithen, AJ Min, and Michael DeLuca all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.

Luca Lombardi earned the victory on the pitcher's mound allowing two hits and one run over three innings, striking out three and walking one. Maxwell Denison threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Michael DeLuca went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead the Blues in hits.

Toronto 11, York 1
Â
The Blues secured the four-game sweep with an 11-1 Game 2 victory on Sunday.

After scoring one in the first inning, Toronto tallied three runs in the fourth inning. Joon Choi and Sean Kwok each drove in runs during the inning.

Dean Christidis got the win for University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The pitcher lasted two innings, allowing zero hits and zero runs, while striking out three and walking one. Grant Shantz, Ethan Vivien, and Matthew Kanhai all put in work in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team towards the victory.
