University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field alumna Alicia Brown helped Canada to a fourth-place finish in the 4x400 relay at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Â
Brown ran the first leg of the race en route to a season's-best time of 3:21.84 as Canada matched their fourth-place finish from the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
Â
"This team ran with so much heart," Brown told CBC after the race. "I'm so proud of these girls. This is opportunity meant a lot to us. I'm proud that we ran as fast as we did today. Our goal was to run a 3:21 and we did that today, just shy of the Canadian record. I think in many ways we exceeded our own expectations. We're a little heartbroken."
Â
During her Varsity Blues career, Brown was awarded the Dr. Fred Tees Memorial Trophy as Athletic Canada's top Canadian university athlete of the year and was named U of T's T-Holder's female athlete of the year in 2012-13.
Â
2012-13 was a breakthrough season for her as she won titles in the 300m at the OUA and U SPORTS championships, while also being named a top eight U SPORTS academic all-Canadian and U of T's top U SPORTS female scholar-athlete.
