Following two weeks away from the Varsity Arena, the No. 2 Toronto Varsity Blues were back on home ice Friday night where they defeated the York Lions 2-1
TORONTO STATS: The Blues were able to jump out in front early on in Friday night's matchup. With the contest just over five minutes old, Celine Frappier scored her first of the season to give Toronto the lead.
After York had responded midway through the opening frame, the Varsity Blues took advantage of a power play opportunity in the second period to regain the lead. Scoring the power play marker, Louie Bieman deflected a point shot past York goalie Serena Vilde.
The Blues would wind up hanging on to that 2-1 advantage the rest of night en route to their fifth win in six games to start the 2021 regular season.
While Frappier and Bieman registered the two Toronto goals, Lauren MacDonnell, Lauren Omoto, Gabby De Serres and Taylor Trussler each recorded an assist.
In goal, Erica Fryer made nine saves on the 10 York shots she faced. In the Lion's goal, Vilde made 23 saves as the Blues outshot York 25-10.
Registering at least a point in every game so far this season, it's the mentality and make-up of their roster that is leading Toronto to so much early success.
"Gabby De Serres just said in the dressing room that we have been having success because of the character on our team," said Varsity Blues head coach Vicky Sunohara. "We have a great veteran leadership group that expects a lot out of themselves and everybody else that puts on the jersey."
"That can put a lot of pressure on our first-year players but with the character they have, they have already put that pressure on themselves, which I think is helping us find ways to win as we continue to grow."
UP NEXT: The Blues will once again do battle with the Lions, this time on the road. Toronto and York will finish off a two-game home and home series November 27 with puck drop scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
