The University of Toronto Varsity Blues softball team split two games with the Ottawa Gee-Gees to finish second at the OIWFA East regional qualifier on Saturday, October 23 in Napanee, Ont.

The Blues will now face the Western Mustangs, who won the West regional, in semi-final action tomorrow (Oct. 24) at 11:30 a.m. at Brampton Fairgrounds.

Toronto 4, Ottawa 1

OIWFA pitcher of the year Katie Humhej allowed only four hits and one run over seven innings, striking out nine and walking zero to earn the win for the Blues.
Â
Humhej also led the Blues offensively, going 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI, while Jessica Tamayo went 1-for-3, driving in two runs and scoring once.

Ottawa 4, Toronto 2

The Varsity Blues got things moving in the first inning, when Beth DeConinck's sac fly scored one run. The Gee-Gees tied the game in the top of the third inning but the Blues regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a single score.

With the game tied at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, Ottawa's Maddy Halstead singled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run, to secure the victory.

Erin Sullivan took the loss, surrendering four runs on nine hits over seven innings, striking out five and walking zero.
