University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimmer Samiha Mohsen reached the podium five times at the 2021 African swimming championships, October 11-17, in Accra, Ghana.
Â
Representing Egypt, Mohsen won the women's 50-metre backstroke in a new Egyptian national record time of 29.63 seconds. She also earned the silver medal in the 100-metre backstroke with a time of 1:04.73, while claiming the bronze medal in the 200-metre backstroke in 2:23.00.
Â
The first-year Faculty of Medicine student added to her medal tally by helping Team Egypt to two silver-medal standings in the mixed 400 medley relay and women's 400 medley relay.
Â
She also placed fourth in the women's 50-metre freestyle in a time of 26.29 seconds.
Â
"Samiha is a wonderful example of the student-athletes that we attract to U of T," said Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald. "Coming from Egypt, she has ventured abroad, finished her Master's degree and is now in medical school here at U of T, all the while able to compete in the sport of swimming at a high level. She will be an important sprinter for us as we try to win the national title in February."
Â
Mohsen and the Blues open their 2021-22 season this Saturday, October 23 as they host the Waterloo Warriors in dual-meet action.
