BLUES WIN ARGO CUP

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team defeated the York Lions 25-2 in the 51st annual Red & Blue Bowl on Saturday, October 16 at Varsity Stadium.

With the win, the Blues win their first Argo Cup since 2016 and improve their all-time record over the Lions to 32-19.

"I think the defensive coaches did a great job preparing them," said Varsity Blues head coach Greg Marshall . "Our kids did a good job paying attention to detail and they just went out and executed their assignments. It was a lot of gang tackling and swarming to the ball and it was a really great defensive effort."

TORONTO STATS: Second-year defensive back Tolu Ahmed led all players with seven tackles, one forced fumble and one breakup, while third-year linebacker James Greig had five tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss and one forced fumble. 2019 all-Canadian Malcolm Campbell chipped in with three tackles and one sack.

Cody Hale also had an impressive stat line on the day. The third-year defensive back had 1.5 tackles, one tackle for loss, one fumble recovery and one interception for a 49-yard touchdown return in the win.

Fifth-year quarterback Clay Sequeira went 12-for-32 for 99 yards and one touchdown. Fourth-year receiver Nolan Lovegrove made five catches for 43 yards and one major.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Third-year kicker Chris MacLean opened the scoring with a 16-yard field goal midway through the first quarter. Four minutes later, third-year defensive back Cody Hall picked off York quarterback Noah Craney and returned it 49 yards for the major. The Blues were up 10-0 after 15 minutes of action.

A low-scoring second quarter saw four fumbles and one interception. After the Blues conceded a safety to allow York on the board, MacLean ended the half with a 22-yard field goal. Toronto led 13-2 at halftime.

A Toronto single and safety would be all the scoring the third quarter would see. Midway through the fourth, Sequeira connected a four-yard pass with Lovegrove to extend Toronto's lead to 23-2.

UP NEXT:
The Blues head to Guelph, Ont., to take on the Gryphons next Saturday, October 23. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
