University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey player Sam McCrory and baseball veteran Michael Deluca have been named OUA athletes of the week for the period ending October 10, 2021.
Sam McCrory, Field Hockey, Toronto Varsity Blues
With two critical clashes looming against the York Lions, the Varsity Blues field hockey team needed to be at their best this past week and helping them do just that in their pair of top-5 tilts was Sam McCrory.
McCrory scored two goals in leading the No. 2 Varsity Blues to a pair of big wins over the third-ranked Lions, with each proving monumental in the ultimate result. In their first meeting, the kinesiology major opened the scoring with what turned out to be the game-winning goal in Toronto's 2-0 win on Wednesday night. As a follow up, the second-year forward netted another of her team's two goals in their 2-1 victory on Friday night.
Not only has the Kitchener, Ont. native helped the Varsity Blues top the OUA's East Division, but she has done so to the tune of a conference-leading six goals in just five games.
Michael Deluca, Baseball, Toronto Varsity Blues
The Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team were among the 14 squads looking to advance past the weekend's regional qualifiers to the upcoming OUA Championship, and with Michael Deluca's offensive contributions in tow, they were able to do just that.
Deluca led the Varsity Blues to a spotless 4-0 record this past weekend in Sudbury, Ont. and did so with consistent contributions game in and game out. The criminology and political science major held a .500 average over the four games, amassing five hits, eight RBI, and six runs for the regional champions, who will now welcome the additional remaining teams to Ajax Sportsplex on Sunday, October 17.
While the fourth-year outfielder contributed offensively in each of his team's lopsided victories, his most potent performance came in the team's win over York, wherein he went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and knocked in four runs in the team's eventual 14-4 victory.
