The No. 3 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team shutout the Laurentian Voyageurs 2-0 on Saturday afternoon (Feb 8) at Varsity Arena to clinch the top spot in the OUA standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After a scoreless first period that saw the Blues and Voyageurs exchange powerplay opportunities, Toronto looked to get out on the right foot in the second. They came out with energy despite coming off a big 4-1 win over the Nipissing Lakers last night (Feb 7). The De Serres sister connected to open up the scoring for U of T. Mathilde De Serres won a puck battle in the corner and made a terrific no-look pass to Gabrielle De Serres in front of the goal, where she made no mistake. 10 seconds after the goal, Laurentian took a penalty to give the Blues the chance to extend their lead. Taylor Trussler did just that as she roofed a backhand on Voyageurs goalie Shanna Dolighan. Toronto headed to the dressing room after 40 minutes with a two goal lead.
The Blues had a five-on-three opportunity early on in the third but were unable to get anything past Dolighan. Toronto got into some penalty trouble of their own, to give Laurentian some light. The tight defensive core of the Varsity Blues kept the Voyageurs from getting anything going as Toronto held on to win their fifth-consecutive game.
Third-year goalie Madeline Albert made 22 saves and recorded her fifth shutout of the season.
UP NEXT: The Blues close out the regular season on the road as they take on the Western Mustangs on Friday night at 7:00pm.
