The No. 3 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Western Mustangs 2-1 to close out their regular season on Friday night (Feb 14) in London, Ont.
Â
With the victory, Toronto finished the regular season with a record of 17-4-1-2 (W-L-OTW-OTL) placing them at the top of the OUA standings. The Blues will take on the eighth-seed in a best-of-three OUA Quarterfinal playoff series.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: After killing a couple of penalties, the Varsity Blues received a chance on the powerplay for themselves. Cristine Chao's wrist shot from the point beat the Mustangs goalie Carmen Lasis to open up the scoring. Lauren MacDonnell added another goal just over a minute later to give Toronto a two-goal lead after 20 minutes.
Â
The Mustangs switched things up to start the frame, putting Tareya Webster in goal in place of Lasis. The Blues continued to get into penalty trouble in the second, this time allowing Western to get on the board as Kira Memet banged in a rebound out front.
Â
Second-year goalie Erica Fryer held strong in the crease for the Blues as she made 15 of her 34 saves in the third period. Toronto halted the Mustangs final offensive charge to give the Blues their sixth straight win.
Â
Third-year defencemen Gabrielle De Serres recorded assists on both Toronto goals and extended her point streak to seven consecutive games.
