The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team came up short to the Western Mustangs 3-1 in Game 2 of their best-of-three OUA Round 1 playoff series at Thompson Arena.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: Both teams came out of the gate with a lot of energy, exchanging big shots and big hits. Just over halfway through the opening frame, the Blues took a costly penalty. On the ensuing powerplay, Sean Montgomery tipped in a point shot to open the scoring for the Mustangs.
Â
Western took advantage of another powerplay opportunity in the second as Anthony Stefano beat second-year goale Alex Bishop. Toronto strung together a few man-advantages of their own but were shut down by the Muntangs goalie Luke Peresinni. In the final minute of the frame, Ethan Szypula extended the Western lead to three, giving U of T extra work to do if they wanted to make a comeback.
Â
The Blues came out with everything they had in the third. Evan MacEachern gave the team some light just 49 seconds into the frame as his wrister from the point beat Peresinni. Toronto kept pressing but Peresinni and the Western defence held off their high-flying offence to tie up the playoff series at one.
Â
UP NEXT: The series will wrap up tomorrow night (Feb 16) at Varsity Arena. Puck drops at 7 pm.
