The Varsity Blues men's swimming program is pleased to announce that another outstanding swimmer, Liam Weaver, has signed a letter of intent and committed to competing for the Varsity Blues beginning in the 2021-22 season.
"I feel that Liam will be the definitive 'diamond-in-the-rough' when he enrolls this coming fall, and at 6-foot-7, he certainly has the size to dominate", said Varsity Blues swimming head coach Byron MacDonald. "Since his move to the nationally-renown Cascade Swim Club, under coach Dave Johnson, Liam has jumped ahead very quickly and he has not even come close to gaining the strength in his frame. His upside is huge."
Considered one of the top sprinters in the country, the Calgary native qualified to attend the Olympic Trials (Tokyo 2020), which, in Swimming Canada's new format, is quite the accomplishment for the high school star.
"I believe U of T is the right program due to its history of both athletic and academic success, and its high-level coaching", said Weaver. "I am looking forward to meeting and training with such a great group of guys and being able to represent such a prestigious school. I also look forward to exploring and getting to know the city of Toronto."
The Blues graduated 50m sprint national champion Cam Kidd in 2020 and current OUA champ Ethan Fazekas will be entering his fourth year in 2021 so it was important to bolster the sprint crew for the future.
"You can never have too many sprinters—particularly for the relays", said MacDonald. "Weaver will join fellow incoming recruit, Maksym Klakov, who is the top high school sprinter in Ontario to form a great, long term 1-2 punch for the Blues." Â
Students who sign a letter of intent and/or commit to Varsity Blues intercollegiate teams will be eligible to play at the University of Toronto provided they are academically admissible and have applied through the normal process with the Ontario Universities Application Centre.
