The No. 3 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team shutout the Brock Badgers 3-0 on Friday night (Jan 3) at Varsity Arena to put them into first place in the OUA.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: After a scoreless first period, the Blues came out hungry to find the back of the net in the second. Cristine Chao opened up the scoring by side stepping a Brock defender and burying the puck five hole on Badgers goalie Jensen Murphy. Just over two minutes later, Breanna Berndsen found the puck midst a scramble in the Badgers crease and slid it home, putting the Blues up by two after two.
Â
Brock took a penalty just before the midway point of the third period, giving Toronto's third ranked powerplay a chance to put this game out of reach. A Jana Headrick shot would bounce and find Berndsen who would knock in her second of the game. The Badgers didn't give up and applied pressure on the Blues third-year goalie Madeline Albert late in the game. Albert would stop all 10 shot they took in the frame to help the Blues to victory.
Â
Albert made 22 saves and recorded her third shutout of the season.
Â
UP NEXT: The Blues head to Guelph to battle the Gryphons on Sunday night at 7:30pm.
