Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

NO. 4 BLUES SHUTOUT GOLDEN HAWKS

The No. 4 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team shutout the Laurier Golden Hawks 4-0 on Saturday afternoon (Jan 25) in Waterloo.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues held majority possession of the puck in the first period, outshooting the Golden Hawks 10-3. With 1:37 left in the frame, Toronto captain Stephaine Ayres scored her fifth of the season and her third in her last two games to put U of T ahead at the first intermission.

The Blues found the back of the net again in the second when Mathilde De Serres fed Gabrielle De Serres in front, who snuck the puck five-hole on Hawks goalie Victoria Kelaiditis. Laurier was able to gain control through the remainder of the frame, peppering Toronto second-year goalie Erica Fryer with 11 shots. Fryer shut the door to keep the Blues two-goal lead in tact going into the third.

A rowdy third period saw 18 minutes of penalties given out between both teams. Natasha Athanasakos added to the Varsity Blues lead on the powerplay by tipping in a Shaelynn Waite blast from the point. The Hawks pulled their goalie but couldn't get anything past Fryer. G. De Serres buried her second of the game into the empty net to put the game out of reach.

Fryer made 19 saves in the victory and recorded her fourth shutout of the season.

UP NEXT: The Blues head back home for a three-game home stand, starting off on Friday night (Jan 31) as they take on the Western Mustangs at 7:00pm.
