Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

ALBERT, BLUES BLANK MUSTANGS

The No. 3 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team shutout the Western Mustangs 3-0 on Friday night (Jan 31) at Varsity Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED: After a back and forth first period that ended scoreless, the Blues took control in the second, outshooting the Mustangs 13-2 in the frame. Fourth-year forward Breanna Berndsen opened the scoring just over five minutes into the period for Toronto. Western got into some penalty trouble and the Blues took advantage. Lauren MacDonnell tracked a bouncing puck in the crease and buried it fivehole on Mustangs goalie Carmen Lasis. Toronto had another powerplay opportunity later in the frame and Taylor Trussler tipped in a Madelyn Walsh blast from the point to give the Blues a three goal lead through 40 minutes.

U of T got into penalty trouble throughout the final period, giving the top ranked powerplay in the OUA a chance to get the Mustangs back into the game. The Blues managed to shut down the Western advantage, largely due to third-year goalie Madeline Albert looking sharp. Albert held strong throughout the remainder of the frame to solidify the Blues victory.

Albert made 26 saves in the winning effort and recorded her fourth shutout of the season.

UP NEXT: The Blues are back in action on Friday (Feb 7) as they look to even the season series against the No. 8 Nipissing Lakers. Puck drops at 7:00pm at Varsity Arena.
