The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the Western Mustangs on Wednesday night (Jan. 22) at Varsity Arena.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: First-year forward Ross Krieger opened the scoring midway through the first period as he finished off a nice passing play with Chase Olsen and Nathan Hudgin. Krieger's sixth point in the last six games had the Blues up 1-0 at the first intermission.
Â
Toronto extended their lead early in the second period when Oliver Benwell found the bottom corner of the net off a nice feed from David Thomson. U of T held a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes.
Â
The Mustangs finally got on the board midway through the third period as Kenny Huether buried a rebound. With the Blues down 6-on-4, Stephen Desrocher evened the score to force overtime with just eight seconds remaining in regulation.
Â
Western completed the comeback just 23 seconds into the extra frame as Franco Sproviero's shot went through traffic and into the top corner of the net.
Â
Second-year Blues netminder Alex Bishop made 37 saves in the loss.
Â
UP NEXT:Â The Blues are back in action this Saturday, January 25 as they travel to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. Puck drop is set for 7:07 pm.
