The No. 3 University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 5-2 on Friday night (Jan 17) at Varsity Arena.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues opened up the scoring with Nathan Hudgin feeding Kyle Potts on a two-on-one opportunity. The Lancers answered back quickly with a goal of their own from Brennen Feasey. With 25 seconds remaining in the period, Connor Logan gave Windsor the lead. Toronto headed to the dressing room down by one after 20 minutes.
Â
Under two minutes into the second period, David Thomson took the puck end-to-end and fed Hudgin to tie the game back up. The Blues continued to roll as Chase Olsen picked up a puck from behind the net and scored on the wrap-around to give the Toronto the lead. The Varsity Blues league-leading powerplay was given the opportunity to find the back of the net and Joey Manchurek did just that, wiring a shot past Lancers goalie Jonathan Reinhart. Toronto headed into the third period with a two-goal lead.
Â
Five minutes into the final frame, Kyle Clarke and Manchurek broke out on a two-on-one. Manchurek passed to Clarke, who made no mistake and roofed it, giving the Blues four unanswered goals. Windsor was hungry to get back into the game but second-year goalie Alex Bishop stood tall, stopping all 16 shots the Lancers took in the third to solidify the victory.
Â
Bishop made 40 saves in the winning effort, keeping U of T atop the OUA West division.
Â
UP NEXT: The Blues are back at Varsity Arena tomorrow night to take on the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks at 7:00 p.m.
