BLUES DROP SEMIFINAL MATCH TO GAELS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's volleyball team fell 3-1 (21-25, 20-25, 26-24, 20-25) to the Final Four host Queen's Gaels in semifinal action on Saturday (Mar. 9) afternoon.

BRONZE NEXT: The Blues still have a chance to make the podium as they battle the Windsor Lancers in the bronze medal match tomorrow (Mar. 10) afternoon. Opening serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year outside hitter Chris Towe put up a team-high 18 points on 17 kills and a block. He also chipped in with eight digs in the match.

First-year outside hitter Evan Falardeau recorded 12 kills, two blocks and an ace for 15 points, while third-year setter Jordan Figueira registered a game-high 39 assists and 10 digs in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Gaels rallied off a 6-1 run to help take a 16-11 lead into the first technical timeout. Toronto responded outscoring Queen's 7-1 to get within one point, but were unable to do anything else. They dropped the first set 25-21.

The second set was a back-and-forth affair, but once again Queen's was up at the technical timeout, this time 16-12. The Gaels went on to capture the second set 25-20.

The host of the Final Four kept the pressure on, taking a 16-11 advantage into the third technical timeout. Down 24-23 though, the Blues were able to come from behind and steal the set 26-24.

The Blues kept battling in the fourth set, but were trailing 16-14 at the technical timeout. From there, Queen's went on a 6-2 run, which led a 25-20 set win and the match.
