The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's volleyball team finished fourth overall after a 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 19-25) loss to the No. 10 Windsor Lancers on Sunday (Mar. 10) afternoon in Kingston, Ont.
This marks Toronto's best finish since the 2003-2004 season. Â
TORONTO STATS:Â First-year outside hitter Evan Falardeau put up a game-high 21.5 points on 19 kills, 1.5 blocks and an ace. He also chipped in with five digs.
Fourth-year outside hitter Chris Towe posted 17 kills and 1.5 block for 19.5 points, while third-year setter Evan Figueira recorded a game-high 42 assists and seven digs in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The two squads exchanged blows in the opening set, with Windsor holding the slight 16-15 advantage at the technical timeout. Out of the break Toronto put together a 6-1 run, which helped them snag the set 25-22.Â
The Lancers jumped out to the earlier 7-3 lead in the second set, but the Blues were able to cut the deficit to 16-14 at the technical timeout. Windsor held on to the advantage the rest of the way to take a 25-22 set victory.
Windsor continued the momentum in the third set leading 16-12 at the technical timeout. Toronto rallied off a 6-2 run to make the score 18-17, but were unable to snatch the lead the rest of the way. They dropped it 25-22.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the fourth set, but Windsor was up 16-13 at the technical timeout. The Lancers registered recorded six of the next eight points out of the break to ultimately snag the set 25-19 and the match.Â
